Rescue Puppy Without Sight or Hearing Charms the Internet as He Waits for a Family in Wyoming
Sage Bennett

There are some dogs you simply can't overlook, and Tough fits that description perfectly. He is remarkably cute, and nothing about his appearance would tip you off that he came into the world without either sight or hearing.
His face is full of expression and his features are larger than life, which has led many viewers to compare him to an animated character stepping off the screen. This puppy with special needs is now up for adoption in Laramie, Wyoming. Even with the obstacles he faces and will continue to face, he is holding out hope of finding the caring family he deserves — and it seems likely that whoever takes him home will be the fortunate one.
He is simply a treasure. Others felt the same way. One commenter, @Abby, collected over 21,000 likes when she wrote, "I actually shed a tear, he looks so animated and adorable!" A second commenter chimed in, "OMG! Those big, giant Pixar eyes!!"
Jillann offered more context in the video's caption. "8-month-old deaf and blind sweetheart Tough will soon be available for adoption at @Laramie Animal Welfare Society in Wyoming. You can help support Tough by donating at ie-animals.org/donate. We will update on his medical exams and adoption progress."
She has not shared an update since posting the video in mid-June, but we are hoping he soon finds the family that will keep him forever.
Is a Happy Life Possible for Dogs That Are Blind and Deaf?
Dogs without sight and hearing can certainly enjoy happy lives — they simply take in the world through different channels. Canines already depend heavily on their powerful sense of smell, and when a dog is both blind and deaf, scent takes on even greater importance for getting around. Touch, vibrations, and familiar routines also help them make sense of what is going on around them.
Muffin's Halo, a company that creates products designed for blind dogs, puts it this way: "Dogs don't rely on sight the way humans do. They instead rely more on instinct, so whether they can see your face or not won't make much of a difference in their feelings or emotions towards you. If a dog can feel your love, it will love you back, and their life will be more pleasant knowing they have someone like you to keep them safe and cared for."
For dogs dealing with both vision and hearing loss, predictability matters a great deal. A steady daily schedule gives them confidence and helps them anticipate what comes next. Sharing a home with another self-assured dog can be a major benefit too, since many dogs with special needs tend to trail their canine housemates.
The most common misunderstanding about dogs that are blind and deaf is the idea that they cannot flourish. The truth is that they are highly resilient and quick to adapt. With a safe and loving home, they are capable of living rich, happy lives and becoming some of the most loyal companions you could ever have.
