Jackie the Bald Eagle Found Alive After Violent Encounter With Two Younger Eagles
Riley Morgan

Millions of people have been following the live nest cameras of Shadow and Jackie, the celebrated bald eagles of Big Bear, who recently became parents to two eaglets. But after the Fourth of July, Jackie was hardly ever observed. Fireworks are said to have frightened her away from the nest that day, and sightings of her remained few and far between, which left a large number of her admirers uneasy.
KTLA 5 reported that Friends of Big Bear Valley, the environmental group behind the nest cameras, said an adult bald eagle was discovered hurt at the northern side of Big Bear Lake on July 16 and 17 following a confrontation with two subadult — or "teenage" — bald eagles. The younger eagles seemed to have targeted her while trying to take the fish she had caught.
Rescuers managed to capture Jackie without harm, and she is now under professional care. ABC News reported on the afternoon of July 21 that she is recovering and going through diagnostic tests. Her recovery has only just started, yet the confirmation that she is alive has comforted the many fans who have been wishing for her to rejoin Shadow and their two eaglets.
Friends of Big Bear Valley also told KTLA 5 that Jackie is in the ideal setting for the treatment she requires. One commenter expressed agreement, writing, "Ojai Raptor Center is the most amazing rescue and rehabilitation facility! Jackie and many other raptors are in the best of care!"
New Details From Friends of Big Bear Valley on Jackie's Condition
On the afternoon of July 21, Friends of Big Bear Valley posted an update on Facebook about Jackie's injuries and her recovery.
"An update from Ojai Raptor Center this morning.
They are still waiting on results for any sign of lead, zinc or rodenticide levels. Jackie is anemic and has inflammation affecting her kidneys. They are unsure of the underlying issue causing these symptoms. The center is working with several specialist veterinarians to determine the best supportive care for the moment.
We loved hearing that Jackie has more energy this morning. She is mad and fighting the staff… That’s our Jackie, a strong and mighty eagle!
She is eating well with assistance and is even picking up food on her own. She is still standing up and perching.
They did do x-rays and there were no fishing hooks, sinkers or other metal objects observed.
We will keep updating you the minute we hear any new information. Thank you for your support, well wishes to Jackie and the entire eagle family.
Keep the positive energy and prayers coming.
The FOBBV Team"
Everyone is pulling for her to recover fully so that she can return soon to Shadow and the chicks still waiting in the nest.
