Vet-Recommended Feline Alternatives for Ragdoll Enthusiasts

With their plush coats and tendency to go limp when lifted, Ragdoll cats have earned a reputation that mirrors their toy namesake. Beyond that charming behavior, they are fluffy, cuddly, and almost dog-like in their loyalty, playfulness, and attachment to their humans. That combination of good looks and a sweet disposition has made them a favorite in many households.

Ragdolls adapt well to both solo owners and busy families, provided they get enough attention. Adopting one means gaining a companion that will reliably stay close by. Yet other breeds also possess these appealing traits. For those drawn to the Ragdoll's friendliness, relaxed attitude, and sumptuously soft fur, veterinarian Dr. Kim Meijer highlights seven breeds worth considering. The following guide can help you find a fitting addition to your home.

Seven Breeds That Resemble the Ragdoll

Birman

A quick look at a Birman might bring to mind a somewhat smaller Ragdoll. The two share sapphire-blue eyes, a long single-layer coat, and colorpoint markings. What clearly separates the Birman is the small white "gloves" on its paws. Their temperaments also differ slightly: Dr. Meijer notes that Birmans are generally more active than Ragdolls, making them a suitable choice for someone seeking a more energetic pet.

Like the Ragdoll, the Birman lacks an undercoat, so its long fur seldom mats. Still, Dr. Meijer cautions that these cats can develop hairballs, so weekly combing is advisable. Apart from that, veterinarians report no breed-specific health issues, and they are considered very healthy overall.

Breed Stats:

  • Temperament: Patient, sweet, playful, sociable
  • Height: 8-10″
  • Weight: 6-15 lbs.
  • Lifespan: 12-16 years

Maine Coon

Ragdoll-like breeds come in various sizes. The Maine Coon, for instance, shares much with the Ragdoll but is larger. These shaggy, famous gentle giants are admired globally. They feature tufted ears and paws, a square jaw reminiscent of Ron Perlman, and a thick, water-resistant double coat available in dozens of color and pattern combinations. Despite their imposing size and somewhat fierce look, Maine Coons rank among the sweetest and most adventurous cats.

Dr. Meijer affirms, "Similar to the Ragdoll, Maine Coons are very affectionate with their people and kids. They have been described as the 'dogs of the cat world'. They are often not afraid of water and can be taught tricks as well."

Keeping these long-haired cats content and healthy mainly involves managing their weight through exercise and providing ample mental stimulation. Regular grooming is crucial, as they tend to get hairballs and tangles.

Breed Stats:

  • Temperament: Affectionate, active, playful, curious
  • Height: 10-16″
  • Weight: 12-22 lbs.
  • Lifespan: 9-15 years

The Norwegian Forest Cat has a captivating past. Dr. Meijer explains they originally helped keep Viking ships free of rodents, proving themselves as skilled hunters. While not identical to Ragdolls, they match them in the ways that matter most, possessing equally golden hearts. So if the Ragdoll personality appeals to you but you want a different appearance, this breed could be ideal.

Dr. Meijer attests, "They are playful and friendly cats, who will do best in a household where there will be plenty of time to play together."

She also points out that Norwegian Forest Cats are more independent than Ragdolls. This can be advantageous, as Ragdolls are known as "Velcro kitties" that may become anxious if left alone frequently. For that reason, a Norwegian Forest Cat might be preferable over a Ragdoll in a home that is empty for much of the day.

Breed Stats:

  • Temperament: Playful, friendly, independent, intelligent
  • Height: 10-12″
  • Weight: 8-15 lbs.
  • Lifespan: 12-16 years

Ragamuffin

Are Ragamuffins similar to Ragdolls? Indeed they are. At one time, they were regarded as a variant of the Ragdoll, though Ragamuffins are now a distinct breed. The most noticeable difference lies in their coats: Ragdolls only have colorpoint fur, while Ragamuffins can display many colors and patterns. In nearly every other aspect, including appearance and temperament, Ragamuffins closely resemble their Ragdoll relatives.

Dr. Meijer says, "They are very gentle and love to cuddle; this is often their favorite thing to do. The Ragamuffin makes a great companion for households with small children due to their friendly nature."

For those seeking cat breeds similar to Ragdolls, the Ragamuffin ranks among the closest matches.

Breed Stats:

  • Temperament: Cuddly, sweet, playful
  • Height: 8-10″
  • Weight: 8-20 lbs.
  • Lifespan: 12-17 years

If you admire the affectionate Ragdoll but want to explore other similar breeds, the Himalayan should be at the top of your list. This gentle, family-oriented cat blends the Persian's luxurious long coat and sweet nature with the Siamese's striking colorpoint pattern and brilliant blue eyes, creating a look remarkably like a Ragdoll. Known for their calm, cuddly temperament, Himalayans make excellent indoor companions for families and anyone seeking a loving feline friend.

Dr. Meijer describes them: "They are a gentle cat breed and usually have lower energy levels. Himalayans love to play with their humans, they actually prefer playing with you over playing by themselves."

Dr. Meijer does offer an important caveat about this Ragdoll alternative's health: they are a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed. This makes them more susceptible to conditions like BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome), which causes breathing difficulties and sometimes requires surgery. Regular veterinary checkups and monitoring your cat's breathing are vital to keeping this loving companion healthy and comfortable.

Breed Stats:

  • Temperament: Calm, easygoing, friendly
  • Height: 10-12″
  • Weight: 8-15 lbs.
  • Lifespan: 10-15 years

Scottish Folds are easily identified by their distinctive trait: ears folded down over rounded heads. They share much with Ragdolls in temperament, and apart from their unique ears, they can sometimes look alike too.

Dr. Meijer attests, "Similar to Ragdolls, Scottish Folds are very gentle and loving. They usually prefer cuddles over active playing, but they still have a good amount of energy. The longhair Scottish Folds will look more like a Ragdoll but with folded ears, whereas the shorthaired Scottish Folds resemble a Ragdoll more by their behavior alone."

However, if you choose one of these Ragdoll-like cats, remember they require special care to stay healthy and happy.

Dr. Meijer warns, "Because of their specific folded ears, they will need a bit more attention in regards to their health, as the folding gene that makes their ears so cute also carries a higher risk for cartilage disorders that can cause severe arthritis. They also are more prone to becoming overweight due to their round build and relaxed nature. Their ears don't require any extra care, however they do require grooming once or twice a week to prevent any hairballs [especially for long-haired Scottish Folds]."

Breed Stats:

  • Temperament: Affectionate, cuddly, gentle
  • Height: 8-10″
  • Weight: 6-13 lbs.
  • Lifespan: 11-15 years

If you appreciate the Ragdoll's appearance but would rather have a less clingy cat, the British Longhair could be the ideal middle ground. These attractive cats have a silky coat that comes in many colors. Their eyes are typically bright gold, but can also be green or even blue, just like a Ragdoll's.

Dr. Meijer claims, "Males tend to be cuddlier and friendlier with people in general, while the females can be a bit more aloof. British Longhairs don't really want to cuddle too much, but often they will want to be near to you. They are very intelligent and calm. This breed actually once held the record for loudest purr, so they will let you know if they are content or not."

Overall, for cat lovers who enjoy a gentle, fluffy companion without constant attention-seeking, the British Longhair offers many Ragdoll qualities while retaining a more independent streak.
