Five Feline Breeds That Channel the Scottish Fold's Teddy Bear Charm
Hayden Scott

Scottish Fold cats have plenty of appealing qualities. They tend to be gentle, playful, and loving, often enjoying close contact with their humans. Their appearance, though, is what truly sets them apart: those signature folded ears, a rounded head, and thick, soft fur give them a teddy bear quality that many people find hard to resist.
If you adore cats but can't locate a Scottish Fold at your local shelter, that doesn't mean you can't become a pet parent. Fortunately, several other breeds are worth considering. Some have unusual looks, others have upright ears, a few are especially fluffy, and a couple share the Scottish Fold's typical temperament rather than its appearance. Whatever draws you to Scottish Folds, these alternatives offer traits that may remind you of your favorite feline.

How anyone purporting to love animals can advocate for a Scottish fold beggars the mind. These cats originated from a birth defect that affects all the cartilage in their bodies, not just the ears, and the breed is known to suffer severely from arthritis. Additionally, Persian cats have breathing issues due to the ridiculous breed standard requiring a flat face. Please do not force more animals to suffer from inane human folly and choose pets that aren't bred for whimsy.
To help you decide which four-legged family member might suit your household, we've rounded up five cat breeds similar to Scottish Folds that make adorable, teddy bear-like companions. As you read about these other calm cat breeds, you'll soon see which one captures your heart.

British Shorthair

If you appreciate the affectionate, easygoing nature of Scottish Folds, a British Shorthair may win you over too. This alternative strikes a nice balance between friendly and sociable without being too demanding. These low-maintenance cats also have plush coats and round, bear-like faces that invite cuddling.
"These teddy bear cats tend to be reserved, calm, quiet, and gentle," describes expert veterinary consultant Dr. Liza Cahn. "They're playful without being hyperactive, affectionate yet independent, and generally considered a highly adaptable family pet. They mature more slowly physically and emotionally, and often prefer sitting beside their people rather than being picked up or carried."
Breed Stats:
- Temperament: Calm, quiet, affectionate, independent
- Height: 11-14″
- Weight: up to 17 lbs.
- Lifespan: 12-16 years
American Curl

When listing cats that resemble Scottish Folds, the American Curl deserves a spot. Like Scottish Folds, they have attractive coats, large eyes, and distinctive ears that make them wonderful pets whether you're an empty nester, live alone, or have a large family.
"These charming, playful, and affectionate little cats are best recognized by a distinctive ear shape, which curls backward towards their head," explains Dr. Cahn. If you adopt one as a kitten, though, don't be surprised if its ears are straight at first. According to Dr. Cahn, they are born with straight ears, but then curl into their distinctive shape as they age.
You'll also want to be ready to provide a bit of extra care to keep them happy and healthy. "Their unusual ear shape can contribute to wax buildup and may increase the risk of ear infections, but it has not been linked to the systemic cartilage and bone disorder seen in Scottish Folds."
Breed Stats:
- Temperament: Sociable, smart, friendly, tolerant of kids/other pets
- Height: 8-10″
- Weight: 5-10 lbs.
- Lifespan: 11-15 years
Ragdoll

For those who appreciate cats with cuddly personalities and striking looks, the Ragdoll is another Scottish Fold alternative to consider. Known for their long, silky coats, bright blue eyes, and eye-catching colorpoint markings, Ragdolls can capture your heart at first glance.
"While they are bred for a calm, docile, and affectionate temperament, not all Ragdolls will exhibit this behavior. Nonetheless, they are known for being extremely social and affectionate pets," Dr. Cahn shares. What more could a pet parent want?
Breed Stats:
- Temperament: Laid-back, sweet, friendly, social
- Height: 9-11″
- Weight: 8-20+ lbs.
- Lifespan: 12-15 years
Ragamuffin

Ragamuffins are often called teddy bears with whiskers for good reason. Their plush coats, expressive eyes, and famously relaxed personalities give them an irresistibly cuddly appeal, much like Scottish Folds, while their friendly nature means they're happiest when included in whatever their humans are doing.
Experts say Ragamuffins are typically adaptable and good-natured, with enough playfulness to keep things interesting without demanding constant activity. That easygoing temperament is one of the qualities that makes them an appealing alternative to the Scottish Fold. While their looks are quite different, both breeds can bring a calm, affectionate presence to the home.
Breed Stats:
- Temperament: Agreeable, snuggly, calm, friendly
- Height: 9-11″
- Weight: up to 15-20 lbs.
- Lifespan: 13-16 years
Persian

If you're drawn to Scottish Folds because of their incredibly soft fur, you'll be pleased to know Persians fit that description too. These adorable felines are among the most popular and widely beloved cat breeds, with a history spanning centuries.
A classic lap cat breed, these furry companions are generally quiet, easygoing, affectionate with their families, and sociable with new friends.
However, Dr. Cahn does warn that they can be a high-maintenance breed in part due to their significant grooming requirements thanks to their plush coats. However, you shouldn't let that keep you from getting one. Once you get in the routine of brushing them, you'll discover that it's just another way you can bond with your feline teddy bear as well.
Breed Stats:
- Temperament: Affectionate, calm, gentle, friendly
- Height: 8-10″
- Weight: 8-15 lbs.
- Lifespan: up to 15 years
