Sleepy Golden Retriever Pup Turns Down Every Invitation to Begin the Day

Dogs tend to fall into one of two categories when it comes to mornings: some leap out of bed ready to take on the world, while others stay put until they have no other choice. Finding a dog somewhere in the middle is uncommon.

Young puppies usually belong to the eager group. After sleeping through the night, they often wake up with plenty of energy and dive straight into the day. But one Golden Retriever puppy appears to be an exception—he shows no desire to begin his day and ignores every attempt his mom makes to coax him out of bed.

Saint, a five-month-old Golden Retriever, is called a “lazy puppy” by his mom in the video's on-screen text. She posted the funny clip on TikTok through his dedicated account, @mygoldensaint, showing her efforts to persuade Saint to start his day.

In the footage, the cute pup stands at the top of some stairs with a plush toy in his mouth. He seems to be sizing up the situation while his mom asks him to get up. She offers a walk, a treat, breakfast—or some mix of those options. After tilting his head a few times as if weighing what's on offer, Saint turns and walks back to bed with his toy.

Many people who don't consider themselves morning people—myself included—can relate. “Can't blame him!!!” one user wrote in agreement. Another joked, “You bring the breakfast to him, please.”

What Sleep Schedule Does a 5-Month-Old Puppy Need?

Saint might come across as lazy, but at five months old he is still a puppy in the middle of growing. The American Kennel Club notes that puppies require 18 to 20 hours of sleep each day. Like human babies, they don't get that rest in one unbroken stretch. A puppy of this age typically sleeps for a long period at night and then takes several naps during the day to reach their daily sleep total.

During their waking hours, puppies use a lot of energy, develop physically, and pick up new things throughout the day. So it's quite possible that Saint isn't being lazy in particular—he may simply not be ready to follow the schedule his mom has in mind for the day.
