How an Injured Stray Finally Let His Guard Down After a Clever Neighborhood Trick
Riley Howard

Helping a stray dog sounds straightforward, but figuring out the right approach can be tricky. Some dogs eagerly walk up to a person, while others—like this determined stray—require every bit of a rescuer's ingenuity and persistence.
Left to survive on his own in the neighborhood, this gentle stray had been failed by humans before. So it's understandable that he kept his distance from people, even with an injured leg. That is, until one clever dog mom devised the ideal strategy on September 22.
Only days earlier, the streets were his sole shelter. Now, with the help of @thegoldenlifeofbrody and their neighbors, this once-abandoned dog is moving closer to trusting humans and finding a permanent home.
That approach was brilliant. The friendly dog was too anxious to trust people, but he clearly experienced FOMO when he spotted the neighborhood dogs playing together. Working as a team, they coaxed him into the yard without making him feel trapped or threatened—and that set the stage for a relaxed, though very lengthy, rescue.
One commenter applauded, "I’m so glad the neighborhood pulled together and made sure he was going to be OK." To me, the community effort is the most heartwarming aspect of this rescue! Or at least it was, until @thegoldenlifeofbrody started winning the abandoned dog's trust.
The following day, the rescued dog—now named Chip—went to the vet for his hurt paw. He also received a much-needed bath and plenty of pampering, and he began to seriously reconsider his view of humans. By mid-morning, he was even ready for cuddles!
What a good boy! Whoever abandoned him had no idea what they were missing out on, and I’m beyond relieved to see that Chip is being cared for by people who truly adore him. That’s the kind of TLC that every dog deserves, especially when healing from an injury.
Finding a Stray Dog’s Forever Home
On September 24, Chip’s rescuer announced that he’s officially looking for his forever home. He’s about 20 pounds and 1.5 years old, but I’m not the only one who sees some puppy energy leftover in this dog. He’s currently in Dallas, Texas, and isn’t waiting on any major medical intervention, so he’s ready to go home ASAP.
Whoever adopts him will have a future full of love and laughter, so I won’t be surprised if this dog mom finds herself drowning in adoption interest. Good luck!
