"What Breed Is She?"

Young puppies have boundless energy and need plenty of exercise. Taking Belle for a walk or playing with her in the yard almost always draws questions from passersby about her breed—it feels like walking with a celebrity!

Belle is at the stage where she tries to jump on people as they pass. Her leash is kept short, and sometimes we're not sure what to expect. We get oohs and ahhs and high-pitched screams about how adorable Belle is, as well as the occasional unkind remark about how our puppy needs training. She is a puppy, after all, and quite well-trained (but that's beside the point). Most people are friendly towards her and want to inquire about what type of dog she is.

Goldendoodle + Labradoodle = Double Doodle!

When asked about her breed, we often get into the whole doodle discussion. It is sometimes easier to say she is a Goldendoodle rather than the lengthy explanation of a Double Doodle. The people we do share the whole Double Doodle explanation with thoroughly enjoy learning something new and are often amused and fascinated by the cute term.

All three breeds have similar characteristics, are very much alike, and all have Poodle traits. The Goldendoodle and Labradoodle have traits consistent with the Golden Retriever and the Labrador Retriever.

The Goldendoodle

The popular Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, two awesome dogs.

Golden Retrievers are very lovable dogs due to their friendly nature. They are also fun to play catch with and are excellent water dogs. The Poodle contributes to the low-allergy, low-shed, hypoallergenic coat of the Double Doodle. Poodles are also very intelligent and make excellent show dogs.

Goldendoodles, besides being ridiculously cute, are great with kids, loyal, smart, and a wonderful addition to the home.

The Labradoodle

The Labradoodle is a cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. It was originally developed to be a hypoallergenic guide dog. Not all Labradoodles are hypoallergenic, however. The hypoallergenic coat is a quality many people look for, but it depends on the individual dog's coat type.

The Labradoodle is happiest when it is with the people it loves. They have the energy and work ethic of the Labrador Retriever, as well as the work ethic of the Poodle. The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular dogs in the United States and is known for its kind, pleasant temperament. It loves retrieving balls and frisbees or participating in other forms of physical activity.

Choosing a Double Doodle

Double Doodles have a great mix of desirable traits from the Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, and Poodle, and these three breeds make for excellent companions. They are smart, fun, lovable, loyal, and super sweet dogs. Their coats will vary, whether it is wavy, curly, or flat. Some may shed more than others, and some require more grooming. No Double Doodle is the same, just like no one dog or person is the same! Regardless, their sweet demeanor is consistent and makes them an ideal candidate for those considering a new puppy for their home.

Belle's Double Doodle Family Profile

  • Dixie: Dixie is Belle's mother and is a Goldendoodle. She weighs 40 pounds and is apricot in color. She has a wonderful, sweet, loving disposition and makes a great family dog.
  • Yankee: Yankee is Belle's father and is a Labradoodle. He weighs 60 pounds and is sweet-natured, loving, family-oriented, and well-behaved! He loves to hike and is a great off-lead!
  • The Litter: The ten littermates were born on Valentine's Day, 2016. What perfect timing considering they are all such beautiful, sweet puppies! They were born at the breeder's home and never kept in cages or kennels. Dixie and Yankee were also lovingly cared for. We were able to meet both parents when visiting the pups before making our final decision. Dixie hopped into the pen with her puppies and snuggled them all. Such a sweet momma!
