Unique Siberian-Inspired Names for Your Husky

Looking for a distinctive name for your Siberian Husky? While you could choose something like “Balto” or “Yukon,” be aware that these are common and you might encounter other dogs with the same name at the park. Also, avoid overly common names like “Charlie,” as many dogs may respond to it.

What to Expect in This List

You won’t find lengthy words here that are impractical for a dog. For instance, “Kamchatka” is a peninsula in eastern Siberia and sounds impressive, but it’s too long for a dog to recognize. Some names work in other languages but not in Russian or native Siberian languages.

If you’re after a unique name for your Siberian Husky, consider these suggestions.

This list should give your Siberian Husky a good laugh.

Siberian Cities, Regions, and More

I’ve named all my dogs after Siberian locations, but since many were hard to pronounce, we often used nicknames.

  • Buryat: republic
  • Kara: sea
  • Novaya (nickname Nova): island in the Arctic sea
  • Novosibersk (nickname Novo for a boy, Nova for a girl): city
  • Omsk: city on the Trans-Siberian railroad
  • Taishet (nickname Tasha): city on the Trans-Siberian railroad
  • Tobolsk (Toby as a nickname): ancient fortress
  • Tomsk: city near the Trans-Siberian railroad
  • Ugra: Native term for all of Siberia from the northern Ural mountains to the Arctic Sea. The dogs we call Siberian Huskies are actually Ugra Huskies, but since Ugra is also an Indian word, Siberia likely became the common name.

Siberian Mountain Ranges

  • Baikal
  • Chamar
  • Chersky
  • Gydan
  • Koryak
  • Ural mountains

Siberian Rivers

  • Amur
  • Kolyma (Kola is a good nickname)
  • Lena
  • Yana river

These Siberian Huskies are a little too young to be named!

Siberian Tribes

Siberian tribes offer excellent name ideas for your dog:

  • Chuckchi: Most Siberians come from this tribe, making it a highly authentic choice
  • Hun
  • Koryaks: Tribe in the far east, mostly on the Kamchatka peninsula
  • Mansi: One of the tribes in the Ugra region, in the far north where Siberian Huskies are part of the family.
  • Nenet
  • Saha
  • Ugyar
  • Yupik: One of the indigenous Siberian tribes that still keep Eskimo-type dogs

Names from Siberian Mythology

  • Chagan: One of the gods who formed the earth by diving to the ocean bottom and bringing up dirt
  • Kami: Word for shaman in a Turkic language of Siberia
  • Kara: Famous shaman who could bring the dead back to life
  • Morgon: Famous shaman, another name for Kara
  • Nama: The man who saved his wife, children, and animals in a boat during the great flood

Russian Names and Words

Siberia’s population includes original tribes and Europeans who arrived voluntarily or by force. Several provide good names:

  • Sasha: Popular Russian name
  • Yermak: Cossack leader who conquered most of Siberia for the Russians

A few unusual words also make fine names:

  • Kasha: Russian word for porridge, a common food in Siberia
  • Malchik: Russian word for boy
  • Yasak: Tribute (taxes) that the Siberians had to pay to the Russians

Look at those beautiful eyes.

After You’ve Chosen a Name

Once you pick your Sibe’s new name, get a tag from a local pet store or order one online. Siberians are notorious escape artists, and without a tag, you might never see your dog again if he runs off.

Buy a tag with his name, your name, and your phone number. It could even save his life.

Also, ask your vet about microchipping at your next visit.

Siberians are real escape artists! Make sure you get an ID tag as soon as possible.

Siberia’s Legacy

Whether Siberia was named after the Sabir tribe or is a Tatar word for “sleeping land,” both the region and its dogs are fascinating, and plenty of great names exist. This vast area spans over five million square miles, and when Russia sent prisoners here, they didn’t even fence the prison—the land was so large and barren there was nowhere to escape to.

Do you have ideas for your dog’s new name? Some might feel awkward to pronounce at first, but go ahead and choose something special—after calling your Siberian Husky fifty times, it’ll feel natural.

My dog Kola used to listen to his Siberian name. Sometimes!

I don’t use these commands in training my dog because I find Arabic words work much better. If they aren’t too hard for you to say, they’ll make your Siberian Husky stand out at the dog park when you call him to heel!

Kolyma (Kola) of Kamchatka is my first Siberian Husky.
