What Is an Indie Dog?

“Indie Dog” is a charming nickname for the Indian Pariah dog, also referred to as the “Desi Dog” or “INDog” (short for Indian Native Dog). As the name implies, the Indian Pariah dog is an ancient breed native to India. Indie Dogs developed as independent, free-roaming pack animals over thousands of years, which is why they tend to be hardy, resourceful, and generally friendly with a good deal of intelligence. While many Indian Pariah Dogs live as strays, numerous others are kept as pets and guard dogs. When properly socialized, Indie dogs can become wonderful, friendly, loyal, and easy-to-train companions.

Naming Tips for Indian Dogs

With such a vast array of beautiful Desi and Hindi dog names available, choosing the ideal one for your dog can be challenging—we've only covered a small portion here. Your naming process may still be ongoing, but if you need help deciding, consider these suggestions.

  • Consider Short, Sharp Names: The advantage of a shorter name (especially one with strong consonants) is that it can be simpler to call out and use during training. Just ensure that whatever name you pick doesn't sound like one of your commands, or you might confuse your pup!
  • Match Them To Your Dog’s Personality and Looks: This one is fairly self-evident. There are plenty of beautiful Desi names related to physical appearance and admirable personality traits, so finding one that sounds great and fits your dog shouldn't be too difficult!
  • Test It Out Loud: Many undoubtedly beautiful names can be too lengthy or hard to pronounce when spoken aloud, which could be an issue when you need to get your dog's attention quickly. You don't have to choose a short and simple name (though it might not be a bad idea for the reasons we mentioned above), but do say your potential name choice aloud a few times to ensure it's a good fit.
