When most people picture a fox, they imagine the classic red fox, or Vulpes vulpes. Red foxes are native throughout the entire Northern Hemisphere, which is why they are the species most commonly associated with the term "fox" (though the increasingly popular big-eared fennec fox may eventually overtake them). As their name suggests, red foxes are known for their bright rust-red fur, which inspired us to include these colorful names.

Since the era of Aesop's fables, people around the world have told stories about mystical foxes, and in certain East Asian mythologies, some foxes have even attained godlike status. These names are all inspired by significant mythological fox figures from various cultures (though many originate from Japan, where foxes are uniquely celebrated in folklore and religion).
- Reynard: Reynard the Fox was a popular trickster figure in medieval European folklore. The name "Reynard" comes from the French word for fox, "renard."
- Kitsune: In Japanese folklore, kitsune are fox spirits who often appear as tricksters or shape shifters. They are frequently depicted with multiple tails, with the oldest fox spirits having up to nine tails.
- Kumiho: In Korean mythology, kumiho are shape-shifting, nine-tailed foxes that can assume the form of humans, most commonly beautiful women. Both kitsune and kumiho are derived from jiuweihu, the magical nine-tailed fox spirits from ancient Chinese mythology.
- Yegan: A wild, people-eating foxlike beast from Chinese mythology.
- Firefox: Not the web browser—in Finland, the firefox (or tulikettu) is a mystical fox with a tail of twinkling fire.
- Tenko: The Japanese name for the Sky Fox, a powerful golden fox spirit that flies through the heavens.
- Aguara: A fox trickster spirit from Guarani mythology.
- Inari: Inari Ōkami is the Shinto deity of foxes, fertility, rice, and agriculture. Inari shrines, often marked with scarlet torii gates and kitsune figures, can be found all over Japan.
- Kuzunoha: A popular white kitsune character from Japanese folklore. After being freed from a trap by a young nobleman, the grateful Kuzunoha assumed the form of a beautiful woman and married him.
- Dakiniten: An esoteric Japanese Buddhist goddess with Hindu origins that eventually became intrinsically linked to Inari. She was often depicted riding a white fox.
- Amaterasu: The Shinto goddess of the sun, Amaterasu, would sometimes assume the form of a dragon-fox.
