Coraline the Foster Cat Turns Playtime Into a Wrestling Match With Her Kittens
Taylor Gray

Ciana, who fosters cats and kittens in Southern California under the TikTok handle @cianasfosters, is currently caring for a mother cat named Coraline. Coraline's approach to parenting stands out from the typical nurturing behavior one might expect. Rather than gently tending to her small kittens, she pounces on them, tackles them, and wrestles as if they were fully grown adults—regardless of whether they are prepared for it.
Coraline holds nothing back and shows no gentleness toward her young. The kittens hardly get a moment to register what is happening before their mother returns for another round. These amusing, rough play sessions have left viewers laughing and questioning whether Coraline has forgotten she is raising babies.
It was both funny and telling to read that this is Coraline's favorite pastime, though for the kittens, it amounts to child abuse. In the caption, Ciana wrote, "She's having a blast, and it's been absolutely hilarious to watch LOL!"
Thousands of comments poured in from viewers who shared the amusement. @Anika Delinger remarked, "Rediscovering yourself after pregnancy is so necessary." @April Cullins referred to the kittens as "DIY chew toys!" Another user commented, "Those back paws rated E for everyone."
One comment from @nnn had us chuckling: "Momma in 5 years: 'I don't know why my kids don't call me. They're so ungrateful'."
The Developmental Role of Rough Play Between Mother Cats and Kittens
Commenter @Me captured the essence perfectly: "They need to learn to cat, and this is Cat 101."
As surprising as it may seem, this kind of rough play is a normal and crucial component of a kitten's growth. Mother cats frequently engage in this mock fighting to help their kittens develop coordination, confidence, and the hunting and defensive abilities they will rely on later in life. Hepper notes that rough play also imparts key social lessons, such as bite inhibition and interpreting other cats' body language.
Another factor could be at play: weaning. Hepper explains, "There comes a time in every kitten's life when they must be weaned from nursing their mother. Weaning is a process that can occur over days or weeks, and may require some aggressive behavior from the mother in order for the kitten to get the point."
From an outside perspective, it may look like pure chaos, but for the mother cat, it is simply another day of instilling essential life skills in her kittens.
