There are cute dogs, and then there's Dodger. This Mini Dapple Piebald Dachshund has distinct markings that create the appearance of a small mask over his face, giving him a look that is both charming and slightly impish. It comes as no surprise that the online world has become completely enamored with him.
Dodger's video has amassed over 3.6 million views and more than 3,200 comments… people are captivated by his one-of-a-kind appearance! As one commenter, @Kiah.190, noted, “You got the mythical one!” @Ink by Drake chimed in with, “Is this a limited edition?”
What Prompted Concern About Dodger Being a Double Dapple Dachshund?
A commenter named @ivanthagr8t posted, “Double dapple sadly, poor thing.” That left us wondering what was behind the remark, so we looked into it. As explained by Rocky Mountain Dachshund Rescue, double dapple Dachshunds possess a particular coat pattern that is frequently linked to major health issues, such as impaired vision, blindness, microphthalmia (abnormally small eyes), missing eyes, deafness, and hearing loss.
The rescue organization points out that these dangers are serious enough that ethical breeders should steer clear of deliberately producing double dapples. “Breeding a pair of dachshunds with merle coat-patterns produces a ‘double merle’ a.k.a. ‘double dapple,’ a dog with homozygous or two merle alleles: MM. Each puppy born has a 25% chance of homozygous MM—that’s one in every four puppies, or 25 out of 100 dogs.”
At the same time, Alpha Paw indicates that distinctive markings do not necessarily stem from double dapple genetics. In certain instances, they can result from the far less common piebald gene. They point out that, per the American Kennel Club, piebald is a coat pattern rather than a color, producing sharply outlined white areas on otherwise standard coat colors and patterns.
Alpha Paw underscores the need to stay away from breeders who purposefully create double dapples, since doing so supports breeding methods tied to avoidable health problems. They further advise asking for pedigree paperwork and health records when buying a puppy. Those considering getting a dog should also keep in mind that dogs with double dapple-related health conditions might need continuous veterinary attention, which makes pet insurance something to think about.
Still, whatever his genetics may be, it's easy for anyone to see that Dodger is an utterly lovable little dog who has won over millions of viewers.
