Swollen Tail Base in Cats: What Could Be Causing It?

Potential Causes of a Cat's Swollen Tail Base

Several different factors can lead to swelling at the base of a cat's tail. The following are among the most frequently seen:

  • Trauma is a frequent culprit: if a cat's tail is pulled forcefully, it may become dislocated or fractured, resulting in swelling. (1)
  • An abscess could also be responsible. While anal gland abscesses can occur, they are more often seen in cats that go outdoors or get into fights with other cats in the household.
  • A tumor may be the source of the swelling.
  • Another possibility is a condition known as "stud tail." In this case, the cat—whether male or female—repeatedly rubs its tail against walls to distribute scent, which can clog pores and cause swelling.

Seek Veterinary Attention

Because the range of possible causes is so broad, a definitive diagnosis cannot be made without a veterinarian's examination. If the issue is left untreated and turns out to be an injury involving nerve damage or an abscess, the cat could lose its tail or even succumb to a blood infection.

If your cat’s tail is noticeably swollen, it’s time for a trip to the vet.
