Some dogs have a mild condition—hardly more than a tremor or head shake—and others have seizures so rarely that no steps are necessary (apart from keeping the dog safe, staying calm, and comforting them during the episode).",[20,456,457],{},"In fact, many dogs with seizures manage fine without any special veterinary care. This included a full CBC panel, a re-test on his \"trough\" (low point in the day) phenobarbital and potassium bromide levels, and a \"thyroid panel\" to check for hypothyroidism, as hypothyroidism can cause seizures in Greyhounds and other dogs.",[20,469,470],{},"The blood tests revealed he's slightly anemic, but that may be from poor-quality food in his previous home. The experts at the vet college advised a 24-hour cold turkey period, as this medication can stay in the system for quite a while; then they suggested starting him at 75% of the previous dosage.",[20,475,476],{},"Reducing the KBr dosage has been a success so far, with much greater back-end stability and mental alertness, much less staggering and stumbling, and no seizures. All four seizures were under one minute, two were more like 30 seconds, and they were spaced out over hours, so he wasn't in danger of overheating.
